How to ensure teacher wellbeing

There is a lot of knowledge surrounding ‘student well being’ in schools. It’s an agreed-upon notion that all students should be supported. However, what ‘teacher wellbeing’ looks like is less agreed upon. Although important, many educators and institutions approach this topic differently. As a young teacher, how can you navigate this terrain and find a support network that works for you?

At PRAC-E Symposium III, a school leader detailed the steps he takes to provide support to his staff during stressful periods. The classroom teachers on the panel also shared what tips/tricks work for them to minimize anxiety.

SUMMARY

  • ‘Wellbeing’ should never be separated into categories. Wellbeing should be a priority across the whole school.
  • Limit your work at your school to self-imposed ‘office hours’. Leave your work at school, and make sure you have hobbies/interests you can pursue.
  • Take advantage of the ‘rules’ function on your email, and limit the onslaught of emails you get each day. Organize your inbox into an easy to manage system.
  • If something can wait, do not engage with work issues on the weekends. Do not set up that expectation, as this could easily escalate to you never getting time away from work.

This is such a good question! There is plenty of research into teacher wellbeing that is starting to show a picture that if your relationships within the school (to other teachers, to leadership) are strong then you’re much more likely to be satisfied with your job.

Of course, that doesn’t help you to improve relationships, but it’s possibly a useful way of thinking to be aware of how important it is…
